FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)
What does worship look like at Northside Drive Baptist Church?
Worship at Northside Drive is formal in character and steeped in the rich, liturgical tradition of the Christian Church. We gather as a local manifestation of the Body of Christ - baptized believers striving to live out the teachings of Christ. Through form and order of worship, we celebrate the resurrection of Christ and his saving work among us as Prophet, Priest and King.
The liturgy we follow is shaped by theological and biblical principles incorporated in centuries of Christian Worship. The traditions include observing the seasons of the Christian year - Advent, Christians, Ephiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost - and special days such as Reformation Sunday, All Saints Day and the Festival of Thanksgiving. Throughout the year, we participate in the worship of the larger Christian Church by reading from a common lectionary, a collection of scripture passages from the Old Testament, Gospels and Epistles.
What do the elements of the liturgical service mean?
The lighted candles represent Christ's presence in worship.
Acolytes are attendants or helpers who assist in worship by bearing the cross and Bible in worship processions and recessions. The procession symbolizes the approach to God, led by the cross and Bible, followed by the choir and ministers.
In the reading of the four Gospels, we are addressed by the words of Christ and experience an encounter with the living Christ. Therefore the congregation stands during the reading of the Gospel Lesson.
The paraments are the fabric hangings on the pulpit, lectern and altar table. Their colors correspond to the liturgical seasons of the Christian year:
- Advent purple signifies royalty of Christ
- Christmas white symbolizes purity and joy, and the glory of Christ
- Epiphany of the Lord white
- Period after Epiphany green represents hope and peace, and the ongoing growth of the church
- Lent purple represents penitence and mourning
- Easter white
- Pentecost red symbolizing fire, blood, and the coming of the Holy Spirit
- Ordinary Time green
- White is also used for all major festivals of the year
