Introduction to Church School
Adult Church School classes provide different learning opportunities for all ages of adults to strengthen their Christian pilgrimage. We offer a variety of classes, some age-oriented, some topic-oriented, with emphasis on Bible study, seminars and lively discussion. We encourage everyone to visit several different classes to find the right "fit" and to participate in any class offered that is of interest. Special seminars and classes are offered several times a year as well. There is a place for everyone to learn and grow in their relationship to God in Christ. Come join us!
Church School begins each Sunday at 9:30 AM.
Church School 2009-2010
Foundations Class: (Room 207)
This class of young professionals, singles, couples, and families seeks to be more than a class. It is a community that offers a foundation for living by praying and providing for one another. The Foundations Class will be finishing up an in depth study of the Gospel of Mark and focusing on other stories in the Bible that impact and influence their faith.
Teacher(s): Mike Gregg
Community Leader(s): Melissa Bryson
Art & Soul Class: (Room 202)
This traditional Bible Study class utilizes the lectionary to follow the Bible through the church year and draws on a variety of sources to create a custom curriculum. Previous studies have utilized the Bible Workbench series, current events through The Thoughtful Christian, special studies during the Advent season, Lenten studies from Ethics Daily (Baptist Committee on Ethics), and a focus on Baptist beliefs.
Teacher(s): Dan Oakley and Cathy Wooten
Community Leaders(s): Barbara Atchley
Roger Williams Class: (Room 201)
Named for a seventeenth century Baptist champion of religious liberty, this group has been surveying the development of the Christian faith by examining the thought and faith of dozens of especially influential persons and their writings. This journey has taken them from the New Testament through the Church Fathers, the Scholastics, the Reformers, and early modern interpreters of the faith. Any adult is welcome.
Teacher(s): Jerry Poole
Community Leader(s): George Taylor
Friendship Class: (Room 205)
This is a deeply thinking class of active and retired women. This class will be studying the stories and the writings of some of the Apocryphal/Deuterocanonical and the Gnostic authors. In the winter they will engage in the lives of some of the unnamed women in the scriptures with a brief look at Bishop Spong's new book on eternity
Teacher(s): Mary Ann Hickman
Community Leader(s): Joann Warmack
Seekers Class: (Conference Room)
This is a community of mixed ages and relationships, engaging the Christian faith through study and devotion, growing in love for God and others, and bringing this love and faith into action on God's world. The Seekers Class utilizes timely and thought-provoking curriculum from The Thoughtful Christian. Previous studies include: Into the Middle East, the Apocrypha, and Immigration.
Teacher(s): Rhonda Harris
Community Leaders(s): Liz-Harris Lamkin
Men's Class: (Room 116)
